Abstract: In December 2010, ESO will deliver to its Council a proposal for the construction of the 42m E-ELT, the largest optical-infrared telescope ever designed. If the project is approved in December, first light of the E-ELT on Cerro Armazones in the Atacama desert is expected in 2019. The E-ELT will excel among other competitive projects of this type for its photon collecting power and angular resolution. The proposal will include the results of the telescope industrial study and, for instrumentation, the outcome of 9 instrument studies, which cover a wide range of observing capabilities and science goals. The instruments have been studied by Consortia of Institutes in the member states and the OATs has been involved in 3 of them. In my talk, I will describe the key science cases and briefly the instruments. The ESO community is currently discussing the choice of the first 5 instruments which will compose the first generation of instruments.
