Abstract: In this seminar I will present the most important results of my Ph.D. thesis focused on exploring the formation of thick discs in galaxies, using N-body simulations. Thick discs are very important galactic components that are present in many spiral galaxies, including our own Milky Way. The importance of thick discs lies on the fact that they are mainly composed by old stars with large mixing timescales in comparison to the age of galaxies. This observational evidence implies that thick discs are likely to preserve key information about the early history of galaxies and possibly about their interactions with the galactic environment. However, despite their ubiquitous character and relevance the formation process of thick discs still remains not well understood.
