Local Travel between Adriatico guesthouse and Trieste
The ICTP campus (including Adriatico guesthouse) is located in the Grignano / Miramare area, about 10 km from Trieste city center. By local bus, it takes about 20 minutes from the train station "Trieste Centrale".
Bus no. 6 : PIAZZALE GIOBERTI - GRIGNANO (full route ANDATA: Piazzale Gioberti - Via Giulia - Via Battisti - Via Carducci - Piazza Oberdan - Stazione Centrale - Viale Miramare - Barcola - Grignano), provides public transport between Trieste and ICTP. While going from Trieste, Adriatico guesthouse is at the last stop "Grignano", located very near to the bus stop. The bus no. 6 timetable can be found here. In Trieste, a bus stop is located across the street from the train station, on Viale Miramare.
Important Notes:
- Tickets for the bus must be purchased beforehand (they are not available on the bus). Bus tickets are available at the train station in Trieste, most local "Tabacchi", and newspaper kiosk shops; as well as at ICTP's InfoPoint and the Adriatico guesthouse reception. One can buy either a single ticket (~1.5 Euro) or a 10-trip ticket (~12 Euro). It needs to be stamped once getting on the bus, which allows travel for 90 minutes and use mupliple buses.
- Bus schedules become significantly less frequent at night after 21:00. Many of the regular hour buses stop running at 21:00, after which a few are replaced with the lines A, B, C and D. Details can be checked in the Trieste Trasporti webpage.
- Bus no. 6 still runs at night after 21:00; however some of them do not connect Grignano with Trieste downtown directly. In these cases, one bus runs between Grignano and Barcola, and another runs between Barcola and Trieste. Barcola is an area between Trieste downtown and Grignano, which falls in the route during the regular hour of bus no. 6. These exceptions are marked in the bus schedule with an alphabet letter ("A", "B", ... etc) appended at the end of the respective time.
Local taxis are always available for going to any location. Taxis can be hailed from outside the train station, or by calling the phone numbers given below,
- Radio Taxi: +39-040-307-730
- Taxi Alabarda: +39-040-390-039
Travel to Trieste
TRAIN
The main train station is "Trieste Centrale", located in the centre of Trieste.
CAR
Take the A4 motorway from Venice-Mestre (exit Trieste Sistiana), or the A23 motorway from Tarvisio-Austria. Here, either (1) follow signs for Sistiana-Strada Costiera, then take route SS 14, a panoramic road leading directly to the Trieste city centre, or, (2) drive as far as Trieste Prosecco and then follow the directions to Trieste Centro.
AIRPLANE
The nearest airport is Aeroporto FVG Ronchi dei Legionari (TRS), situated 40 km from Trieste city centre. Airlines that connect to Trieste include Alitalia, Ryanair, Lufthansa, JAT, AirDolomiti, Belleair.
- Bus no. 51 to Trieste connects TRS airport with the city. The price is ~4 Euro one-way; tickets are available for purchase at the automatic kiosk in the airport terminal - arrival area, at the nearby Agenzia Turismo FVG, and at the store in the airport terminal - departure area (next to the security check line). The journey time is ~55 minutes. On exiting the airport terminal building from the main entrance, the bus stop is on the right. Bus station in Trieste is a building next to the train station "Trieste Centrale". Bus no. 51 timetable can be found here; where page 4 is for Airport FVG-Trieste, and page 5 for Trieste-Airport FVG.
- Taxis from TRS airport to the Trieste city costs ~60 Euro. At the airport, taxis are located just outside the main entrance. If one is not available right away, taxis can be called using a special phone close to the tourist office.
Alternatively, one can fly to Venice (Marco Polo) airport, and take a ~30 min. shuttle bus (5 Euro) to train station "Venezia Mestre", and then a ~2 hr train (~11 Euro) to "Trieste Centrale".
A convenient way to go from Venice and Trieste airports to Trieste downtown or to ICTP is the Science Bus. It costs ~18 Euro from Trieste Ronchi airport, and ~90 Euro from Venice airport; hence cheaper than a taxi, but clearly more expensive than bus (or train from Venice). The Science Bus is a shuttle service run by an external company that provides direct transportation in a 8-seater mini bus to and from the nearest airports (including also Treviso and Ljubliana). Please note: persons attending the meeting can ask to have a special discount for the Science Bus service. If interested, write an email to the LOC (agn11@oats.inaf.it) to have the code ("voucher number" on the Science Bus booking page), and use it while reserving the service on line.
