Abstract Cosmological tests of modified gravity dark energy models suffer typically from two problems. First, one normally assumes that the initial perturbation spectrum is the same as in standard models. Any conclusion on the parameters of modified gravity models will then depend on the choice of the initial spectrum. Second, there is an infinity of viable modified gravity models and so it is practically always possible to adjust any model to the observations. In this talk I explore a way to solve both problems, by making use of combinations of observations that do not depend on the initial spectrum and by exploring the spatial structure of dark energy observables rather than their time evolution.
