Abstract In this talk I recount my personal experience with studying the galaxy cluster Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect signal from ground-based bolometer instruments. Our work started with the APEX-SZ camera that detected about 40 previously known clusters during 2007-2010, offering some novel possibilities to study the physics of the intra-cluster gas. Our early results can be extended in the ALMA era to high-z clusters through a combination of bolometer and interferometer imaging. The first APEX-SZ scaling relation papers are now being finalized which I will describe in the context of the more comprehensive Planck and South Pole Telescope (SPT) results. In the second half of my talk I will try to present a bright future for cluster SZ astrophysics and cosmology, focusing on the CCAT experiment where the University of Bonn is involved. For cosmology with cluster number counts and angular clustering, I will show some forecasts for a fiducial CCAT survey of 2000 square degrees. Finally, I will discuss how one can constrain cluster astrophysics using the power spectrum of the SZ effect. Future CCAT power spectrum data will offer almost an order-of-magnitude better constraints than the current SPT-based results, allowing to choose between different evolutionary models that are now degenerate.
