Abstract: With the Herschel Space Observatory it was possible to study comprehensively water and its related molecules in space. Water is part of a chemical network that includes also hydrides like OH and CH, and in particular their ionized versions. Water molecules were found in all stages of star and planet formation. In high-temperature regions, water can be a major coolant. On the other hand, the water abundance is strongly influenced by UV and X-ray irradiation near the protostar. I will overview the history of water and hydrides as seen by the Herschel Observatory.
