Abstract:
Semi-analytic models represent a tool for studying galaxy formation and
evolution. Such models can be used in a powerful way in order to understand
the relative importance of different physical processes in determining the ever
more detailed picture of our Universe.
I will review aims, limits and methods of these models and I will discuss,
through a number of applications, how these models can be used to develop
observational tests that can help us in understanding the physics of galaxy
formation and evolution. The discussion will include some recent results
obtained in the framework of the Eso Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS), a
survey of 20 clusters from redshift ~0.4 to ~1.
