Title: Galaxy protoclusters: cradles of galaxy formation
Date: Wednesday, November 7th, 2012
Time: 11:30
Venue: Villa Bazzoni

Abstract Galaxy protoclusters are large galaxy overdensities at early cosmic times that lack evidence of being virialized systems. Given the large masses associated with these structures they are likely to be bound and evolve into lower redshift virialized clusters. Protoclusters therefore represent an early stage of galaxy cluster formation. In this talk I will describe recent work on characterising these enigmatic objects. I will discuss how we locate them and study their member galaxies, and how we can use them to understand how dense environments affects galaxy formation.
