Abstract:
I present a detailed comparison between direct cosmological zoom-simulations and results from semi-analytic models based on the same dark matter merger trees. The global limitations of these two modeling approaches are assessed focusing on the baryon content of the halos at different redshifts. At high redshifts (z > 2), the star formation efficiency in simulations exceeds significantly the one in Semi-Analytical Models (SAMs). Due to an insufficient treatment of the physics of cold flows SAMs without metal cooling significantly over-predict the hot gas content at high redshifts when compared to simulations. All SAMs predict that in-situ star formation dominates the mass assembly of galaxies at all masses and at all redshifts - in contrast to the simulations - thereby challenging the currently discussed size evolution models.
