Title: Mass and environment as drivers of galaxy evolution: simplicity and its consequences

Abstract: The galaxy population, both at low and high redshift, exhibits a number of striking simplicities in terms of the inter-relationships of star-formation rates, stellar masses and environments. I will explore the consequences of these and show how a simple phenomenological approach to the evolving galaxy population offers powerful new insights into the dominant processes involved and may explain some the most basic properties of galaxies, including the Schechter form of the galactic mass function.
