Abstract:
Large surveys and relatively low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) observations are fundamental to address the general properties of any given astrophysical class of objects. However monitoring of individual systems -through increasingly high quality and SNR observations- reveals new insights which might even require the revision of the currently adopted paradigms. In this talk I will present a few examples in the field of cataclysmic variables and novae where this has occurred, leading also to serendipitous discoveries.
