Abstract The initial conditions that lead to cosmic structures are well understood. How these evolve into galaxies, stars and planets is less certain and the dirty details are often hidden. I'll discuss the latest supercomputer simulations that attempt to follow the origin of cosmic structures. In particular I will focus on the origin of our galaxy and the formation and abundance of habitable Earth-like planets on which intelligent life could evolve.
