Title: The state and mass of molecular hydrogen gas in galaxies: a new emerging view
Date: Wednesday, December 18th, 2013
Time: 11:30
Venue: Villa Bazzoni

Abstract What powers the molecular lines emanating from interstellar H2 gas? What line(s) one must use to confidently map the H2 gas mass distribution in galaxies? For nearly three decades now the answers to these questions have been: far-UV/optical photons, and low-J CO lines. A new emergent view is now challenging these widely-held views, with interesting corollaries about star-formation, stellar feedback, and the stellar IMF.
The role of ALMA, JVLA, and the impact on star-formation recipes in structure formation models will be outlined.
