Abstract: I will report on the progress in characterizing the structure and kinematics of starforming galaxies at redshift ~2 as achieved by the ESO/VLT Large Program zCOSMOS/SINFONI/SINS. Adaptive optics, integral field observations are revealing the presence of large rotating disks along with more irregular structures (mergers) and compact, velocity dispersion dominated galaxies. Orderly rotating disk galaxies are however remarkably different from their local descendants, exhibiting high velocity dispersion, much higher star formation rates, massive clumps, and gas outflows. Moreover, CO mm observations have revealed that such galaxies are much more gas rich than local spirals. On the light of these evidences, possible scenarios for the formation of bulges and thick disks will be discussed.
