Abstract: I will address the evolution of stellar systems progenitors of type Ia supernovae in the light of an improved and more complete approach to the physics of the problem. In these models, previously existing inconsistencies are bypassed, and a smooth evolution towards the explosion is fulfilled when the so called "double degenerate" scenario is adopted. What is new is that the explosion is not triggered, sic et simpliciter, by the approach to the Chandrasekhar mass but by the cessation of stabilizing conditions which, in addition, allowed such a critical value to be bypassed keeping the structure hyper-stable for a long period during the accretion stage. A consequence of this new approach is that several observational properties difficult to understand previously are now simply accounted for. Briefly addressed are also the predictions about the Gravitational Wave Radiation emitted by these systems falling in the range of the next generation space based gravitational wave detectors.
