 Abstract:

New Chandra and XMM observations have revealed once more and better how
complex the emission from galaxies and groups could be. The XMM-Newton
effective area has been instrumental in detecting and characterizing faint
and low surface brightness emission in galaxies and their environment.
Chandra's unprecedented sharpness has shown details and has detected
sources to very faint levels. I will try to illustrate some intriguing
results in the context of the evolution of these systems with a few
selected examples.
